MILFORD, CONN. - Junior Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) fired a 2-over-par, 74, in the first round of the 2013 Sacred Heart Fall Classic to lead all individual golfers entering Monday's final round. The Seton Hall women's golf team also currently leads the tournament.
Kruse has a three-stroke lead on Yale's Elisabeth Bernabe and teammate Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.), who both shot a 5-over-par, 77. Kruse is looking to become Seton Hall's first two-time tournament champion. It would also be the first time Seton Hall has had individual champions in back-to-back tournaments. Last week, McClure won the Rutgers Invitational.
Collectively, Seton Hall has an eight-stroke lead on second place Yale following a 21-over-par, 309, in round one at Great River Golf Club in Milford, Conn.
Seton Hall has never had a team championship and an individual championship in the same tournament.
"I'm really pleased with how we performed today," said head coach Sara Doell. "It was a challenging, new course for us and we played well. I'm especially happy for Ali. She wasn't happy with her performance at Rutgers, so it's nice to see her bounce back in this fashion."
Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) and Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) are currently tied for seventh place following a 7-over-par, 79.
Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) rounded out the team scoring with a 9-over-par, 81.
Junior McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.), competing as an individual, is also 7-over-par with a 79.
Teams will wrap up the 2013 Sacred Heart Fall Classic with the final round on Monday.
