MILFORD, CONN. - Junior Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) lost in a playoff for the individual championship, but her impressive effort was good enough to spearhead a team victory for the Seton Hall women's golf team at the 2013 Sacred Heart Fall Classic on Monday.
The team victory is the third in the young history of the Seton Hall women's golf program. The Pirates defeated second-place Yale by 10 strokes in their first-ever appearance in this tournament. For the two-day event, Seton Hall shot a 53-over-par, 309-320-629.
Kruse, the tournament's individual leader after day one, shot an 11-over-par, 83, in round two which forced a playoff with a pair of Yale golfers, Elisabeth Bernabe and Sandy Wongwaiwate. Her bogey on the first playoff hole ensured that Seton Hall wouldn't get the rare "double win," but nonetheless provides Kruse with her ninth career top-10 finish, which surpasses teammate Hannah Basalone and former teammate Christina Cantu for the most in Seton Hall history. She also now has five, top-5 finishes, which ties Basalone for the most. For the two-day event, Kruse finished with a 13-over-par, 74-83-157. Wongwaiwate won the playoff for the individual title.
"It's great to get our first team win of the season," said head coach Sara Doell. "I'm really pleased with our overall effort this weekend. To have five golfers tie for fourth overall or better is a testament to our hard work and positive mind set. It's hard to see Ali lose in a playoff, but I'm proud of her performance and we know more individual titles are in her future."
Four Pirate golfers tied for fourth among all individuals with a score of 14-oer-par. Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) shot an 81-77-158, Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) had a consistent 79-79-158, Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) tallied her third, top-5 finish with a 77-81-158, and McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.), competing as an individual, shot a 79-79-158.
Senior Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) fired a 21-over-par, 79-86-165, to tie for 14th overall.
Senior Haley Van Es (Granger, Ind.), also competing as an individual, finished at 52-over-par with a 101-95-196.
Seton Hall will return to the links on Sunday to wrap up the 2013 fall season at the Lehigh University Invitational.
