Adler's Triple-Double Boosts Pirates to Four-Set Win

NEWARK, N.J. – Junior Gwen Adler (Barrington, Ill.) recorded Seton Hall's first triple-double in 12 years as the women's volleyball team defeated Iona, 3-1 (25-15, 17-25, 25-23, 25-23), at the NJIT Invitational on Friday.

Adler finished with 28 assists, 20 digs and 10 kills, to become the first Pirate to record a triple-double since Shelbey Manthorpe did at Villanova on Sept. 27, 2014.

As a team, the Pirates outlasted Iona in a defensive battle that featured a combined 177 digs in only four sets. The Hall was able to overcome 17 service errors and limited the Gaels to a .114 attack percentage for the match.

Junior Hania Labanowska (Warsaw, Poland) also had a huge match, recording her second career double-double with 15 kills, a career-high 14 digs and three blocks. Senior Rylee Nelson (Mazeppa, Minn.) finished only one assist shy of a double-double with 18 digs and nine assists.

SET 1:
The Pirates dominated the opening set, holding the Gaels to just a .029 attack percentage in the opening frame. Leading just 8-7 early, The Hall went on an 8-0 run, and a kill by Riley Wooldridge (Mars, Pa.) gave it a commanding 16-8 lead and forced an Iona timeout. An ace by Alex Rasmussen (Lincoln, Neb.) put The Hall in set point, 24-14, and although Iona staved off one set point, a kill by Adler handed set one to the Pirates, 25-15.

SET 2:
Iona got off to a hot start in the second set, scoring five of the first six points. A Gaels attack error cut The Hall's deficit to 12-8, but they took off again with three straight points to take a 15-8 lead into the media timeout. Trailing 23-12, Seton Hall went on a 5-0 burst, and a kill by Daria Safian (Moscow, Russia) cut its deficit to 23-17, but Iona regrouped to tally the final two points of the set and tie the match, 25-17.

SET 3:
Trailing 9-8 in the third set, The Hall scored four straight points to grab a 12-9 advantage and force an Iona timeout. The Gaels were down 19-17, but scored three in a row to grab a 20-19 lead and send Seton Hall to a timeout. The Pirates jumped back ahead, and a kill by Labanowska put them up 23-21. With the score tied at 23, an Iona service error put The Hall in set point, and another kill by Labanowska gave it a 25-23 victory. The third set featured match-highs of 15 ties and eight lead changes.

SET 4:
Seton Hall scored six of the first eight points of set four, but Iona methodically rallied to tie the score at 12. With the score tied at 18, The Hall scored three straight points, and a kill by Labanowska put it up 21-18 and sent Iona to a timeout. Adler's 10^th kill of the day put the Pirates in match point, and two points later, a kill by Safian sent them to a 3-1 match victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Adler recorded team-highs of 28 assists and 20 digs to go with 10 kills, no attack errors and a .556 attack percentage in an all-time effort.
Labanowska had a team-high 15 kills with a career-high 14 digs, three blocks and three assists.
Nelson tallied 18 digs and nine assists.
Freshman Kennedy Cummins (Elkridge, Md.) had a career-high 15 digs to go with four assists.
Seton Hall recorded a .191 attack percentage for the match, while Iona attacked at .114.
The Pirates had 50 kills, while Iona had 45.
The Hall tallied 88 digs, while the Gaels had 89.
Seton Hall had 9.0 team blocks, while Iona had 6.0.

NEWS & NOTES:

Seton Hall improves to 8-3 on the young season, while Iona falls to 4-6.
Adler becomes the first Seton Hall player since Shelbey Manthorpe on Sept. 27, 2014 against Villanova to record a triple-double.
The Hall is now a perfect 15-0 all-time against the Gaels.
The Pirates are now 2-0 in four-set matches this season.
Seton Hall is now a perfect 8-0 this season when it has a higher attack percentage than its opponent.
Labanowska's double-double is her first of the season and the second of her career.
Adler reached 20 digs in a single-match for the second time in her career.
