NEWARK, N.J. – Sophomore Daria Safian (Moscow, Russia) had a team-high 15 kills, while both Gwen Adler (Barrington, Ill.) and Samantha Shelton (Oak Park, Ill.) tallied a double-doubles, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell to New Haven, 3-1 (26-28, 25-23, 21-25, 22-25), on Saturday.

It's the first time this season that Seton Hall has lost despite having a higher attack percentage than its opponent. Additionally, the Pirates had trouble with the Chargers' front line as New Haven collected 10.0 team blocks.

Safian had 15 kills, five digs and two blocks to lead the offense, while Shelton tallied 10 kills and 10 digs for her first career double-double. Adler tied her career-high with 40 assists to go with 10 digs, four kills and two blocks.

Freshman Kennedy Cummins (Elkridge, Md.) tallied a career-high 19 digs to lead The Hall.

SET 1:
The opening set was a back-and-forth affair that featured 17 ties and 11 lead changes. Facing set point, back-to-back New Haven attack errors put the Pirates in set point, 26-25. The Chargers bounced back with the final three points of the set to win, 28-26. The Hall had only a .042 attack percentage in the opening set.

SET 2:
New Haven scored six of the first eight points of the second set. Down 21-16 late in set two, The Hall closed out the frame with a 9-2 run to win 25-23. With the score tied at 23, a New Haven attack error put Seton Hall in set point, and a kill by Safian won it for The Hall. Shelton had six kills, no attack errors and seven digs in the second set alone.

SET 3:
New Haven never trailed in the third set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. A Charger attack error enabled the Pirates to pull to with 19-16, but New Haven scored four of the next five points to grab a commanding 23-17 advantage. The Chargers went on to win set three, 25-21.

SET 4:
With the score tied at eight, New Haven went on an 11-3 run to grab a 19-11 advantage. The Hall answered with a 10-3 run, and a kill by Adler cut its deficit to 22-21, but the Chargers regrouped and closed out the match with a 25-22 set-four victory. Seton Hall had a .276 attack percentage in the fourth set, compared to just .186 for the Chargers, but New Haven had four aces in the final set, which proved to be one of the few difference makers.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Safian had 15 kills, five digs and two blocks.
Adler matched her career-high with 40 assists to go with 10 digs, four kills and two blocks.
Shelton had a double-double with 10 kills, 10 digs and three assists.
Cummins had a team-high 19 digs.
Junior Hania Labanowska (Warsaw, Poland) had 16 digs, seven kills and two aces.
Seton Hall recorded a .162 attack percentage for the match, while New Haven attacked at .149.
The Pirates had 49 kills, while New Haven had 54.
The Hall tallied 73 digs, while the Chargers had 70.
Seton Hall had 6.0 team blocks, while New Haven had 10.0.

NEWS & NOTES:

Seton Hall falls to 8-4 on the season, while New Haven improves to 3-8.
This was the first-ever match between Seton Hall and New Haven.
The Pirates are now 2-1 in four-set matches this season.
It's the first time this season that the Pirates have lost despite having a higher attack percentage than its opponent (8-1).
Safian tallied 15 kills in a single-match for the fifth time this season and the eighth time in her career.
Adler's double-double is her seventh of the season and the 13th of her career.
Shelton's double-double is the first of her career.
Adler reached at least 30 assists in a single-match for the eighth time in her career.
