SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — Led by a trio of double-digit scorers, the Seton Hall men's basketball team (2-0) outlasted the LIU Sharks (0-2), 67-60, inside historic Walsh Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
The Pirates capitalized on their opposition, winning the rebounding battle 39-to-29 and earning ten more foul shots. The Sharks, despite forcing more turnovers and collecting more steals, managed only two more points off turnovers than Seton Hall.
How It Happened
Inside a packed Walsh Gymnasium, the two metro area teams traded buckets in the opening minutes. After a superb debut against Saint Peter's, Roddie Anderson III collected eight of Seton Hall's first ten points, using superb accuracy to put the Pirates up 10-6 just after the 15:00 mark in the opening half.
Yet, once again, LIU fought back against The Hall. As the Pirates' offense began to stumble, the Sharks launched an 11-to-0 salvo that put Seton Hall down four, 24-20, with 3:06 left in the half. As unease filled the air, the Pirates quelled the tension with a fiery end-of-half run to leave no doubt. Brown added another three points, while Simeon Wilcher and Terry Copeland Jr. came up with big buckets as the Pirates closed the half on a 10-to-2 run, heading to the locker room with a 30-26 lead.
Out of the break, Elijah Fisher connected on a layup to secure the Pirates' first points of the half. However, Anderson would put his DNA all over the second half. The graduate guard rattled off seven points in just over two minutes to put The Hall up eight, 39-31. Despite the lead, LIU once again refused to go away. The Sharks shrank the lead to as few as one point, 42-41, but Fisher once again contributed massive buckets to keep Seton Hall in front.
With the game on the line, the Pirates needed to find an answer to finally put away the Sharks. In the end, that answer would come in the form of the Pirates' stifling defense and attacking pressure. Across the final three minutes, the Pirates went on a 9-to-3 run that included five trips to the foul line to down the LIU Sharks, 67-60, inside historic Walsh Gymnasium.
