WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Rodney Brown (Perris, Calif.) knocked down a right corner three-pointer with under seven seconds remaining as the Seton Hall men's basketball team defeated Monmouth, 53-50, in an exhibition contest on Saturday night.
Brown's corner three broke the 50-50 tie in what turned into a grind-it-out second half for both sides.
How It Happened
Seton Hall looked strong out of the gates, scoring the first six points of the contest thanks to made baskets from Simeon Wilcher (Plainfield, N.J.) and Roddie Anderson (Orange County, Calif.). At the 16:56 mark, Elijah Fisher (Toronto, Ontario) kept the Pirate offense flowing with a three-pointer to increase the lead, 9-1.
Midway through the half, Seton Hall's athleticism began to show. On a fast break at the 12:15 mark, a lob from Brown to Devin Williams (Riverside, Calif.) increased the Pirate lead to six, 15-9. Two possessions later on another fast break, Kareem Thomas (Wilmington, Del.) drove baseline and slammed one home over multiple Monmouth defenders, giving the Pirates a 17-9 edge.
With 5:51 to play in the first half, a three-pointer from Del Jones (Landover, Md.) followed by back-to-back buckets from Copeland gave Seton Hall a six-point lead, 28-22. The sides would trade buckets down the stretch of the half as the Pirates took a 33-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The second half saw defense take over, as Seton Hall was able to maintain its lead for much of the second half. After Monmouth drew even for the first time at 38-38, a Copeland layup at 8:50 pushed The Hall back in front. The Hawks would eventually take their first lead of the game on a dunk with 6:59 to play, 42-40.
Now trailing by five coming out of the under-4 timeout, the Pirates regrouped to put together key possessions late. Wilcher nailed a left-wing three with 3:30 to play to pull the Pirates back within two, 46-44. The teams would trade baskets and stops until just over a minute to play, when Wilcher drove into the lane and knocked down a righty floater to tie the game, 50-50. After getting a stop at the defensive end, the Pirates drew up a play for Brown in the corner, who nailed the game-winning three to deliver the win to Seton Hall.
