Pirates Falter Late in Sets; Drop Four-Setter at UConn
10/10/2026 7:41:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
STORRS, CONN. – Freshman Samantha Shelton (Oak Park, Ill.) had a double-double, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball fell to Connecticut, 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 24-26, 14-25), on the road on Saturday.
Â
Seton Hall's offense looked both excellent and disappointing during the match today. In the first two sets, the Pirates looked explosive offensively with a .297 attack percentage, including a .458 mark in the second set. However, The Hall had only a .046 attack percentage over the last two sets.
Â
For a second straight day, the Pirates also had difficulty with an opponent's defensive front line. UConn's 16.0 team blocks today matched Providence's 16.0 from yesterday, a season-high.
Â
Shelton had a team-high 12 kills to go with 10 digs. Senior Maddy Loiselle (Tampa, Fla.) tallied 10 kills, only two attack errors and a .348 attack percentage. Junior Alondra Villanueva (Lima, Peru) had nine kills and seven digs. Sophomore Emilee Fuller (Louisville, Ky.) narrowly missed her first career double-double with a team-high 18 assists to go with nine digs and two kills.
Â
SET 1:
Trailing 13-11 in set one, the Pirates went on an 8-2 run, and a kill by Fuller gave them a 19-15 lead. UConn cut their deficit to just one, 19-18, but out of a timeout, Seton Hall received back-to-back kills from Villanueva to jump back up, 21-18. Down, 22-19, the Huskies shocked the Pirates by closing the set with a 6-0 run to win, 25-22. Â
Â
SET 2:
The second set was by far the best of the match for Seton Hall. The Pirates led wire-to-wire and had a match-high .458 attack percentage. The Hall scored the first four points of the set, and although UConn cut their deficit to one point on three occasions, they couldn't find the equalizer. Leading 19-16, the Pirates received three straight kills from Shelton to grab a commanding 22-16 advantage. The Hall went on to win, 25-19.
Â
SET 3:
The third set was one of the closest the Pirates have played all season. The marathon set included 17 ties and seven lead changes with neither team leading by more than three points. The Hall again appeared poised to win as a UConn service error put it in set point, 24-21, but the Huskies staved off three set points and closed the set with five straight points to claim in improbable 26-24 victory.
Â
SET 4:
Seton Hall never trailed in set two, but never led in set four. A kill by Shelton cut The Hall's deficit to 13-9, but the Huskies answered with a 6-1 run to grab a commanding 19-10 advantage. The Pirates never drew closer than an eight-point advantage the rest of the way in a 25-14 set-four loss.Â
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Pirates will return to action when they return to historic Walsh Gymnasium on Friday, Oct. 16 to take on DePaul. Match time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
