SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – In their final home game of the season, the Seton Hall softball team (29-20, 11-10 BIG EAST) drowned the LIU Sharks (24-21), 2-1, off the back of a pair of clutch hits and a complete game from Rachael Schumann.
How It Happened
What began as a late-season warm-up quickly became a battle between two local schools. After not starting a game for over three weeks, Rachael Schumann stepped into the circle and was flat out dominant. Schumann was perfect through the first three innings, collecting two strikeouts in the third inning.
On offense, meanwhile, the Pirates searched for answers while Schumann dominated in the circle. After stranding a pair of runners in the first and one in the second, The Hall finally broke through in the fourth inning. After putting a pair of runners in scoring position, a Naya Martinez bloop single drove in Jessica Muniz to put The Hall in front, 1-0.
Schumann continued to run hot in the circle up until the sixth inning, but LIU tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning after a two-out RBI single. That tie did not last for long, however. In the bottom of the sixth, the Pirates once again got a pair of runners on-base with the chance to retake the lead. With the game in the balance, Hannah Alexander came off the bench to pinch hit. After quickly facing a 0-2 count, Alexander launched a sacrifice fly to deep right field, scoring Andrea Perez and putting The Hall back up 2-1 at the end of the sixth inning.
With a lead at her back, Schumann returned to the circle looking to close out her second complete game in as many starts. In less than 10 pitches, she retired all three Sharks to secure the Pirates 2-1 victory over the LIU Sharks.
