Chapel Hill, N.C. -- Going up against a 2023 NCAA Tournament opponent on the road in back-to-back games, the Seton Hall women's soccer team stood up to perennial national power North Carolina but the fifth-ranked Tar Heels came out on top, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Anna Prawer (London, England) finished with five saves in the first half and freshman Avery Strohecker (Riding, Va.) stopped two shots on goal for the Pirates (2-3-1). Senior Natalie Tavana played the full 90 minutes and had two shots on goal and classmate Rachel Gerrie (Littleton, Colo) matched her career high with two shots and she posted an attempt on goal.
The Pirates' defense withstood UNC in the first 15 minutes of action with Prawer making three saves. Sophie Liston (Newcastle West, Ireland) had the Pirates' first shot attempt of the game just shy of the 16 minute mark before the Tar Heels struck in the 22nd minute with a goal to take a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Gerrie had a look at the goal in the 48th minute that was saved by the UNC keeper. The Tar Heels doubled their tally in the 57th minute. Later, Tavana put up a strike with her left foot but the UNC keeper made an acrobatic stop that kept the Pirates off the scoreboard.
Along with Tavana, senior Chiara Pucci (Munich, Germany) and sophomore Lily Camacho (Summit, N.J.) played the full 90 minutes on the back line for The Hall.
The Pirates return to Owen T. Carroll FIeld on Sunday, Sept. 8 when they host NJIT at 1 p.m.
