South Orange, N.J. — Junior Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) scored her ninth goal of the season in the fifth minute and the Pirate defense produced a clean sheet in the Seton Hall women's soccer team's first BIG EAST win of the season, 1-0,. over St. John's on Thursday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Tavana is now in sole possession of sixth all-time at Seton Hall with 14 career goals. Senior Skyler Matusz (Kearny, N.J.) and junior Phoebe Hampson (Cheshire, England) earned the assists on the game-winning tally. In her first start of the season, junior Anna Prawer (London, England) finished with a career-high four saves and the shutout.
How It Happened
The Pirates found the back of the net in the fifth minute, its earliest goal of the season. Looking to win the first five minutes, Hampson got possession of the ball in the Pirates attacking half and she moved it forward to Matusz. From just outside the box, Matusz found Tavana inside the 18 and she scored with her left foot to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
The Red Storm held the edge in possession for the remainder of the half, putting up five shots to Seton Hall's two in the first 45 minutes. It was more of the same in the second half where the Johnnies produced five more shots and six corner kicks. Despite the number of chances, the Pirates' backline did not break as junior Chiara Pucci (Munich, Germany), junior Rachel Gerrie (Littleton, Colo.), freshman Lily Camacho (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and freshman Gia Milano (Scotch Plains, N.J.) helped Prawer come out with the clean sheet.
