Providence, R.I. - Junior Phoebe Hampson (Cheshire, England) scored her second goal of the season that made it a one-score game in the middle of the second half but Providence proved to be too much in the BIG EAST opener for both teams as the Seton Hall women's soccer fell to the Friars, 3-1, on Thursday evening.
Freshman Lily Camacho (Scotch Plains, N.J.), who has a BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honor to her name this season, tallied her first career assist on Hampson's goal.
How It Happened
After a dominant first 45 minutes by the Friars where they went up 2-0, the Pirates came out with more energy in the second half. Providence got two shots off in the first five minutes of second stanza but Seton Hall found a chance in its attacking half of the field after senior Brina Micheels (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) was tripped up in the 56th minute. Camacho stepped up to take the free kick and she got the ball into the 18-yard box where it found Hampson, who easily converted on her second goal of the season and made it a 2-1 game.
The Pirates maintained momentum as junior Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) would get a shot off in the 60th minute. However, the Friars would answer in the 70th minute as they scored off of a tough angle that pushed their advantage to 3-1. Micheels posted a pair of shots inside of the 80th minute, including one on target off of a free kick just outside the box, and freshman Gia Milano (Scotch Plains, N.J.) had a shot on goal in the 86th minute but it wouldn't be enough as the Friars came out with the win.
