El Khalifi's Performance Headlines Seton Hall's Appearance at Army

West Point, N.Y. - Senior Hiba El Khalifi won her first three singles matches at the West Point Invitational to reach the semifinals of the C flight singles, headlining the Seton Hall tennis team's second fall tournament of the season this past weekend at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
The C flight was very successful for the Pirates, who had three athletes win a first-round match and two win a second-round match to get to the quarterfinals. In all, four of Seton Hall's eight competitors won at least their first rounder.
El Khalifi was a straight-set winner in each of her three victories and cruised to the semifinals after topping Fairleigh Dickinson's Amina Lasheen in the quarters, 6-3, 6-0. She appeared to be destined for the C final after taking the first set of her semifinal match against Cornell's Sofia Iantosca, 7-6, but the Cornell freshman came back to win the second set and the tiebreaker.
Graduate student Chloe Hamlin and junior Oliwia Kempinski were also first-round winners in the C flight with Hamlin overcoming a first-set loss to win, and Kempinski going straight sets over Villanova's Isabella Steffen. Kempinski followed up with a win over Army West Point's Paulina Feoli in a tiebreaker to reach the quarterfinals.
Senior Aina Plana Ventosa was also a first-round winner in the A singles, defeating Bucknell's Anna Lajos in straight sets.
In doubles, the teams of senior Arina Gumerova and sophomore Arabella Moen and juniors Oliwia Kempinski and Emily O'Donovan each reached the third round. After receiving a first-round bye, Gumerova and Moen topped Fairleigh Dickinson's Namie Isago and Valentina Silva in the A flight second round before bowing out to Syracuse's Polina Kozyreva and Miyuka Kimono. Kempinski and O'Donovan knocked off Fairleigh Dickinson's Madeleine Graber and Shreya Gulia in the B doubles flight second round.
Seton Hall will await the draw of the ITA Regionals with competition taking place Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 in Princeton, N.J.
