New Providence, N.J. - Down 3-2 late in its home opener against Fairfield, the Seton Hall women's tennis team rallied with a pair of thrilling singles wins to pull away from the Stags with a 4-3 victory Saturday night at Murray Hill Tennis & Fitness.
Junior Hiba El Khalifi scored the match-clinching point at No. 4 singles when she pulled away from Fairfield's Scarlett Hutchinson in the third set after it was knotted at 5-5. She ended up with a 6-7(5-7), 6-3, 7-5 victory.
The evening started with the junior Arina Gumerova and freshman Arabella Moen dominating at No. 1 doubles, defeating Hutchinson and Francesca Kalman, 6-0. However, Fairfield rallied with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to nab the point.
Sophomore Oliwia Kempinski earned The Hall's first point of the night with a strong 6-2, 6-0 win over Aina March at No. 5 singles. Fairfield took a 2-1 lead, but the Pirates came right back as Moen finished with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Amanda Nowak at No. 3 singles.
Fairfield won at No. 6 singles to go up 3-2 to set the stage for the late dramatics. At No. 2 singles, junior Aina Plana Ventosa and Katarina Plumtree traded sets to set up a third. Plana was trailing in the third set, 3-2, when she rattled off four straight games to take the match, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and even up the score. El Khalifi followed shortly thereafter with her win to seal The Hall's second team win of the season.
Seton Hall will be back at home at Murray Hill Tennis & Fitness next weekend when it hosts Stony Brook on Friday, Feb. 11 at 4:30 p.m., and Bucknell on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m.
