Newark, N.J. - The Seton Hall men's basketball team used stifling defense to take a wire-to-wire 66-49 victory over Drexel on Wednesday evening at Prudential Center.
The Pirates (7-4) have now won three games in a row on the backs of their defense, which held the Dragons to just 16 points in the first half and 27 percent shooting from the field for the game.
Seton Hall saw serious production off the bench as junior Dre Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.) and senior Tray Jackson (Detroit, Mich.) led the Pirates with 12 points each. Junior Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added eight points, a career-high nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
How It Happened
The Hall led by five, 14-9, with 11:51 to go in the first half when Jackson hit back-to-back three-point baskets that gave the Pirates an 11-point lead, 20-9. Drexel cut their deficit to 10 with under seven minutes to play in the half but the Pirates used a 7-2 run to take a 15-point lead into the locker room, 31-16.
The Pirates used the first seven minutes of the second half to expand their lead thanks to an 18-2 run. Drexel went just 1-of-12 from the field in that span. However, the Dragons would battle back as they used an 11-0 run that whittled the Pirates' lead down to 11, 57-46, with 3:05 to play.
That's when the Pirates turned up their defense, as a steal by freshman Tae Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.) led to a three by senior Al-Amir Dawes (Newark, N.J.) in transition and blocked shots by graduate student KC Ndefo (Elmont, N.Y.) on back-to-back defensive possessions led to four points that pushed the lead up to 18, 64-46, and put the game out of reach.
