Cayce, S.C – The No. 6 seed Seton Hall women's tennis team left it all on the courts Saturday afternoon, but could not keep pace with perennial power No. 2 seed DePaul and was ultimately outlasted, 4-1, in the BIG EAST Championship Semifinal at Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center.
For the second consecutive day, the Pirates (8-10) showed grit from the opening serve, and began the match with a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles from freshmen Michal Matson (St. Albans, New Zealand) and Melody Taal (Ede, Netherlands).
The Blue Demons (16-7) knotted doubles play with a win at the No. 2 flight, but junior Luize Strike (Riga, Latvia) and sophomore Anicka Fajnorova (Bratislava, Slovakia) came up clutch once again for The Hall, and clinched the point with a 6-3 victory at the top flight.
Singles positions one through six were played very competitively, but the Pirates were unable to overcome the lineup of DePaul, who rattled off four straight singles wins to clinch the match and earn a trip to the BIG EAST Final for the fourth consecutive year.
"We had a tough battle today against an extremely strong team," said head coach Riza Zalameda. "Based on the way we played this weekend and down the stretch of the regular season, we already can't wait to compete in next year's championships. This year was an exciting journey, and this team has grown exponentially over the past nine months. We will have everyone back next year and we cannot wait to get back on the courts."
