Pirates top Butler as Underclassmen Dominate

Morgantown, Wva. - The Seton Hall women's swimming & diving freshmen enjoyed great success at the West Virginia Quad Meet this weekend as the Pirates defeated BIG EAST foe Butler, 232-117, while falling to fellow conference mate Xavier, 191.5-157.5, and host West Virginia, 228-128. Four freshmen combined for nine top-three finishes.
Freshman Sara Ouellette (Granby, Conn.) delivered silver medal performances in three races, earning runner-up status in the 400 IM with a time of 4:37.94; in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:14.00; and the 200 IM in a time of 2:13.02.
Fellow freshman Elizabeth Sargent (Trumbull, Conn.) was runner-up in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:11.12 and also scored third-place finishes in the 200 IM (2:13.96) and 400 IM (4:41.10). Classmate Gabby Van Tassell (Staten Island, N.Y.) found success in the distance races, securing third-place finishes in both the 500 freestyle (5:16.61) and the 1650 freestyle (18:12.09). And Jill Calocino (Maywood, N.J.) came in just ahead of Van Tassell in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 18:01.35, good for second place.
It was not all just the freshmen though as junior Sydney Simpson (Tallahassee, Fla.) continued her climb up the ranks as she captured second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:27.67 and finished third in the 100 butterfly in 59.22.Â
The Pirates will be back in the pool the weekend of Oct. 29-30 when they host Providence on the 29th at 1 p.m., and Bucknell on the 30th also at 1 p.m. The Providence meet will be carried live on the Pirate Sports Network.
