MONMOUTH, N.J. – Off the back of standout performances by underclassmen, the Seton Hall women's swimming and diving team secured its first win of the season against the Monmouth Hawks, beating the North Jersey side, 137-66, inside Steadman Natatorium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Just like the season opener, the Pirates opened the meet in dominant fashion in the 200 medley relay. Lindsay Naber demolished her opposition, building a one-second lead in her two laps in the pool. Not to be outdone, her teammates continued to grow the gap as the four legs continued. As the final swimmer touched the wall, Yosun Hacifazioglu, Soluna Lim and Naima Hazell grew their lead to over four seconds, winning the event with a time of 1:48.74.
After debuting in the middle-distance freestyle events last meet, Ellie Walsh stepped up her lap total by taking on the 1000 freestyle. The freshman showcased supreme consistency, splitting below 34 seconds on all but once, allowing her to glide to the wall for an 11-second win with a time of 11:01.50.
In addition to Walsh, fellow freshman and South Jersey standout Kali Collins made the most of her Seton Hall debut. After missing the opening meet of the season, Collins won the 200 freestyle by nearly six seconds with a time of 1:54.74. She followed up that success by winning the 100 freestyle by over a second with a time of 53.53.
Aside from the freshman, two more underclassmen showcased their immense potential on the day. In her lone individual event of the day, Lindsay Naber put on a show in the 100 butterfly. The standout sophomore nearly even split he race, cruising her way to the win with a time of 57.54. Fellow sophomore Ella Drakulich joined her classmate on the top step with her win in the 100 breaststroke, securing a narrow victory over teammate Niama Hazell with a mark of 1:08.50.
Hazell would secure a win on the day, however. The senior sprinter notched a victory in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.58.
Before the final relay arrived, the more upperclassmen notched wins in what had become a clear Seton Hall win. Bianka Bukovics won the 100 backstroke with a season-best mark of 1:00.71, while distance standout Zeynep Aysoy won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:18.72.
With victory already secured, the Pirates were able to swim with stress-free abandon in the 200 freestyle relay to close out the meet. The team of Collins, Naber, Hannah Pronk and Carys Graville held the lead from start to finish, winning the event with a time of 1:40.52
What's Next
The Pirates will return to the pool next on Saturday, October 24, when they travel out to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, to take part in the Bucknell Fall Invite. The meet is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
