BEDMINSTER, N.J. -- Senior Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) shot a 3-over-par, 75, in Friday's final round as the Seton Hall women's golf team finished sixth at their own Pirate Invitational at Trump National.
Whereas yesterday the field had to contend with blustery winds, today the 70 golfers had to deal with sporadic rain showers throughout their round. Despite this, scores came down across the board. McClure shaved four strokes off her first round score to finish tied for 15th with a 10-over-par, 79-75-154.
McClure finished 12 strokes behind the 2015 individual champion, which for a second straight year went to a golfer from Columbia University. Camilla Vik was the lone player in the field to shoot under par for the tournament. She finished with a 2-under-par, 69-73-142.
Collectively, the Pirates shot nine strokes better in round two than they did on Thursday, but the rest of the field played much better as well, and thus, The Hall actually fell two spots to a sixth place finish. They end the two-day event at 51-over-par with a 318-309-627. Two other BIG EAST schools were in the field. Georgetown finished one stroke better than the Pirates, while St. John's finished four strokes worse.
Georgia claimed the team championship with a 23-over-par, 297-302-599.
"I'm heartened to see Ali and Erin play at Trump National in their final season as collegians," said head coach Sara Doell. They've meant so much to our program. But even though we played better, I'm certainly disappointed with our overall finish. I hope our team uses this as motivation heading into their title defense in two weeks."
Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) shot a 5-over-par, 77, in round two. For the event, she tied for 19th place with an 11-over-par, 78-77-155.
Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) and Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) tied for 29th place overall. Pantelas had a "Jekyll and Hyde" afternoon with an 8-over-par, 80. She was 9-over-par on the front nine, but 1-under-par on the back. For the tournament, she was 15-over-par with a 79-80-159. Zabrosky was five strokes better in round two, finishing with a 5-over-par, 77. For the event, she was 15-over-par with an 82-77-159.
Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) shaved four strokes off her first round score. The junior finished the tournament with a 22-over-par, 85-81-166.
McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.) and Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.), both competed as individuals this week. Cutter finished the two-round event at 20-over-par with a 77-87-164, while Fouse was 28-over-par with an 87-85-172.
Twelve teams competed on Trump's "New Course," a par-72, 5,802-yard gem designed and built by Tom Fazio, who has worked closely with Donald Trump as his in-house golf course designer and builder for almost a decade. The New Course literally frames the Old Course, transforming every inch of available land into a handcrafted masterpiece. With a mix of wooded and open spaces and even more elevation changes, The New Course is distinctly different and boasts old school characteristics such as smaller greens and bunkers.
In addition to Seton Hall, participating schools included Boston College, Central Connecticut State University, Columbia University, Georgetown University, University of Georgia, LIU-Brooklyn, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, Rutgers University, St. John's University and Yale University.
Seton Hall will return to the links in two weeks when it attempts to defend its BIG EAST Championship at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., April 16-18.
