WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- The Seton Hall tennis team powered its way to its seventh victory of the spring on Thursday afternoon, winning all nine matches played between singles and doubles competition against Monmouth.
The Hall (7-8) swept all three doubles matches and went on to secure each one of the six singles matches in straight sets with four players yielding a total of four games or less.
Junior Isabell Klingert (Oberbalbach, Germany) and senior Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) needed the minimum of 12 games to post dominant wins over Kendal Kaufmann and Robyn Belen at #4 and #6 respectively.
Freshmen Marisa Quevedo (Tyler, Texas) and Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii) combined to drop just three games between them with Quevedo topping Farrah Smoke in third singles (6-0, 6-2) while Kim cruised past Chioma Gabriel, 6-1, 6-0 from the fifth spot.
At the top two positions, junior Hannah Liljekvist (Djursholm, Sweden) and Luize Strike (Riga, Latvia) posted a pair of victories for the second time in three matches since Strike returned from an extended absence.
Liljekvist defeated Adriana Armendariz 6-1, 6-3 from the top spot while Strike bested Ashley Sandler, 6-3, 6-4 at #2.
The singles sweep came after the Pirates set the tone by out-scoring the Hawks, 24-to-3, in doubles competition. Liljekvist and Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) posted an 8-1 result over Armendariz and Sandler at #1 while Kim and Shoemaker blanked Kauffmann and Smoke to continue their run of success at #2.
Klingert and Quevedo added another win at #3 to complete The Hall's second shutout of Monmouth in as many seasons.
Seton Hall will return to action next Friday, April 11 when the Pirates host St. John's in their final home match of the season. Start time is scheduled for Noon from the Althea Gibson Tennis Center in Newark.
