NEWARK, N.J. -- Seton Hall junior Isabell Klingert (Oberbalbach, Germany) continued her torrid run through her first season in blue & white with yet another singles victory on Friday but the Pirates saw their two match unbeaten streak halted by visiting Xavier in a 6-1 defeat.
Klingert scored the team's lone point while classmates Hannah Liljekvist (Djursholm, Sweden) and Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) added an impressive first doubles win for The Hall (5-8, 1-2 BIG EAST) but the Musketeers (10-4, 2-1 BIG EAST) came out on top for the second time in as many meetings with SHU.
Up against Alex Brinker and Lauren Ghidotti in the top spot, Liljekvist and Keenan powered their way to their third straight victory, scoring an 8-5 result. The pair of juniors has now prevailed fivbe times in the last seven outings and owns a 2-1 mark through three dual matches against conference opponents.
Seton Hall was unable to secure the doubles point however despite another strong performance by Klingert and freshman Marisa Quevedo (Tyler, Texas) at #3 and XU took a one-point edge into singles play,
The Musketeers clinched the team win by claiming the first five singles matches to be decided but Klingert got the Pirates on the board with the latest in an extended run of outstanding efforts this spring.
Selected to play in the sixth position, Klingert handed Lizzie Oosterbaan a straight set (6-4, 6-1) defeat, recording her 14th win in 15 individual appearances to this point in the spring.
Eleven of those victories have come in a dual match setting and the junior is now one win shy of becoming just the third Pirate in the last three years to reach the 20-win plateau in a single season.
With six regular season dual matches remaining, she sits just three victories shy of the standard set by former standout Chloe Sher a year ago when the three-time All-BIG EAST honoree registered 14 dual match wins; the highest total for a Pirate in the last five seasons.
Klingert has also yet to drop a set in three appearances against league foes and has yielded just four sets overall since the team returned to competition following the winter break.
The Hall will get another opportunity to secure a pivotal BIG EAST win when the Pirates host a Providence team that they have bested in seven consecutive meetings. Start-time is set for 5:00 p.m. from the Center Court facility in Morristown, N.J.
