ITHACA, N.Y. - Freshman Cody Wimmer (Macungie, Pa.) wasted no time in making his mark during his first trip to the BIG EAST Championships, delivering a third-place finish in the 500-free to pace the Seton Hall men's swimming and diving squad on the second day of the four-day meet.
Halfway through the competition, the Pirates rank third with 203 points, trailing frontrunners Xavier (327) and Georgetown (257).
Wimmer earned a bronze medal in his first-ever individual event on the championship stage, recording one of two top-four efforts posted by SHU freshmen on the men's side.
The Macungie product led a successful Seton Hall contingent in the event as The Hall claimed one-quarter of the scoring positions. Wimmer's finals time of 4:32.02 was less than two seconds off the winning pace of Xavier's James Foster.
In the B final, Tim Bosse (New Windsor, N.Y.) recorded his second consecutive top-12 finish in the event, placing 12th (4:39.42) after tying for 10th last February. Cooper Lindsley (Lancaster, Pa.) and Ian Campbell (Corvallis, Ore.) added 15th and 16th-place points.
Noah Yanchulis (Arnold, Md.) was .15 seconds shy of contributing a top-three time in his first individual event, clocking in at 1:52.11 in the 200-IM final to claim fourth-place. Matt Zebrowski (Sayreville, N.J.) registered a third top-10 effort by the Seton Hall freshmen on the night, finishing as the runner-up in the B final with a 1:54.13 showing.
The Hall also earned three of the eight spots in the 50-free B final where the team was led by Keith Carlino (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) who jumped up to 10th by clocking in at 21.34 during the night session. Senior James Logan (Wallingford, Pa.) finished 13th overall (21.47) while freshman Jason Tan (Bridgewater, N.J.) placed 16th to add another scoring performance.
To close the day's action, Yanchulis, Logan, Bosse and Carlino teamed to post a season-best 200-free relay time of 1:24.03; taking fourth-place.
Competition continues on Friday and the men's swimming program will feature the 400-IM, 100-Fly, 200-free, 100-breast, 100-back and the 400-medley relay. Male competitors will also return to the diving board, elevating to three meters after Seton Hall senior Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) dominated his way to his second consecutive one meter title on Wednesday.
A live stream of the championships will once again be available on the BIG EAST Digital Network and FOX Sports Go. Preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. from the Ithaca College Athletics and Events Center Aquatics Pavilion with finals starting at 6:00 p.m.
