LEWISBURG, PA. - The reigning BIG EAST champion Seton Hall women's golf team will open the 2014 fall season with the Bucknell Invitational, as it has for each of the prior four seasons, September 6-7.
The three-round event will take place at the par-70 Bucknell Golf Club with two rounds commencing on Saturday and a final round on Sunday. Including Seton Hall and host Bucknell, 14 teams will vie for the title at the season-opening tournament including Cleveland State, Columbia, Lehigh, Kutztown, McDaniel, Niagara, Radford, Rutgers, Siena, St. Francis (N.Y.), William & Mary and Youngstown State.
Seton Hall will bring all seven members of its roster to Bucknell, including two new faces. Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio), who qualified to start for the Pirates this week, and Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.) will be participating in their first tournament as a Pirate.
"I couldn't be more pleased with the progress that our two freshmen have made," said head coach Sara Doell. "Top to bottom, anyone on our roster can compete for a tournament title. It's nice to see the two newcomers come in and push the veterans."
Last season, Seton Hall tied for second among 17 teams at the Bucknell Invitational. It was the third straight year that the Pirates placed in the top three at the season-opening event. After finishing 10th in their first year, Seton Hall placed third in 2011, and tied for second in both 2012 and 2013. Last season, Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) and Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) both tallied top-5 finishes. Kruse fired a 13-over-par, 77-73-73-223, to place third, while McClure shot a 14-over-par, 74-74-76-224, to place fourth.
"This is a tournament that we're very familiar with, so it's nice to start the season here," Doell said. "We've come close here a few years in a row now and the ladies are looking forward to getting on the course."
Kruse, McClure, Pantelas, McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.) and Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) qualified during practice to start for Seton Hall this weekend. Fouse and junior Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) will compete as individuals.
Both days will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
