WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - Fresh off a victory in its first tournament of the 2014-15 year, the Seton Hall women's golf team will take on the William & Mary Invitational at Kingsmill Resort, Sept. 14-16.
In addition to Seton Hall and host William & Mary, a field of 13 schools will vie for the team title including, Appalachian State, Bucknell, Elon, Longwood, Morehead State, Radford, UNC-Wilmington, Towson, Wofford, and fellow BIG EAST members, Georgetown and St. John's. The teams will compete on the par-72, Plantation Course for three rounds over three days.
The Plantation Course is an Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay design that challenges players of all skill levels. The 6,432-yard, par-72 course favors accurate iron play and good putting. Fairway landing areas are generous, but water comes into play on eight holes, and there's no shortage of deep woods or yawning ravines. Greens are large and provide inviting targets for approach shots. Once on the putting surface, undulations and swales make getting down in two a satisfying accomplishment. With landmarks from Richard Kingsmill's 1736 plantation woven into the landscape, a round on the Plantation Course is truly historic.
Last week, the Pirates finally broke through with a team title at the Bucknell Invitational. Seton Hall had finished in the top-3 of the team standings each of the prior three years at the fall-opening event. The Hall fired a 59-over-par, 305-301-293-899, to finish six strokes ahead of second place Rutgers. The victory is the fifth in the history of the women's golf program. Four Pirates registered top-10 finishes in the individual standings with Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) leading the way in second place. McClure finished just two strokes off the individual lead with a 12-over-par, 77-72-73-222. Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) used her a career-best, 71, in the final round to finish in a tie for fourth place at 15-over-par. McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.) tied for eighth place at 19-over-par, while Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) placed 10th at 20-over-par. Freshman Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) rounded out the team scoring at 27-over-par.
Seton Hall will be bringing the same lineup to William & Mary this weekend.
"The field will be slightly better at William & Mary and a pair of BIG EAST competitors will be joining us there, so it'll be a good test for us," said head coach Sara Doell. "We've got a lot of positive momentum rolling now after our win last weekend, so we want to keep it going."
