SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Head Coach Sara Doell announced the 2014 Seton Hall women's golf fall schedule on Wednesday. The Pirates will participate in five tournaments this fall.
Seton Hall will open the fall season as they have for the last four years, at the Bucknell Bison Invitational, hosted by Bucknell University, Sept. 6-7. The Pirates have steadily improved over the years, finishing 10th in 2010, third in 2011 and tying for second in each of the last two seasons. In 2013, Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) and Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) notched top-five individual finishes. Collectively, Seton Hall finished 10 strokes behind William & Mary.
"We've gotten very close at Bucknell the last two years," said head coach Sara Doell. "It's a large field and a great event to start our year."
The following weekend, Seton Hall will take part in the William & Mary Invitational at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va. for the first time. Kingsmill Resort is the host site for the annual LPGA Kingsmill Championship.
Seton Hall will wrap up September with three rounds of golf at the competitive Yale Women's Intercollegiate, Sept. 26-28. It's another very familiar course for the Pirates as the team will be competing in the tournament for the fifth straight year. The Hall has improved mightily over the years, finishing 13th of 14 schools in 2010, eighth in 2011, tying for fourth in 2012, and placing fourth last fall. McClure finished with an 8-over-par, 76-71-74-221, to lead the Pirates and tie for seventh place among 91 individual competitors. Collectively, Seton Hall shot a 6-over-par, 290, in round two to shatter their previous low-round record of 298. The prior record however, was shot on a par-70 course. Seton Hall broke the record by eight strokes despite playing on a par-71 course.
"The team loves playing at Yale," Doell said. "Despite a usually very competitive field, we've seen success. It's a great golf course. We look forward to getting back there."
On October 6-7, Seton Hall will participate in a familiar tournament on a new course. The St. John's Women's Invitational is being held at St. Andrew's Golf Club in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. St. Andrew's is America's oldest golf club and the site where Pirates' head coach Sara Doell won the New York State Women's Am in 1998.
"It's always nice to be able to sprinkle a little golf history into our tournament experience," Doell said. "It's a beautiful course with a rich, American tradition. Personally, it's nice to see our team enjoy a similar experience that I was fortunate enough to partake as an undergraduate."
The Pirates will return to Springdale Golf Club on October 18-19 for the Princeton Invitational. Seton Hall has participated in this tournament in three of its first four years. Last fall, the Pirates placed seventh, while Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) led the team at 18-over-par.
"The fall season is a great blend of some of the events we have played in the past and some new events," Doell said. "By competing at Bucknell, Yale and Princeton, we will have a sense of familiarity with the event, the course and the field that we compete against. Picking up William and Mary and St. John's gives us new events on great golf courses with some strong fields."
