NEW YORK, N.Y. - Seton Hall women's golf head coach Sara Doell was named BIG EAST Coach of the Year on Friday. Doell led the Pirates to their first-ever BIG EAST Championship last week.
Doell was named 2014 Coach of the Year on a vote by her BIG EAST peers. She joins a trio of Pirates, Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.), Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) and Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio), who were also honored on Friday with All-BIG EAST recognition.
"Any award won that is voted on by your peers is significant," Doell said. "I am truly honored and humbled to be recognized by this impressive group of coaches. It has been a labor of love since beginning this program four years ago. I am incredibly proud of what our ladies have been able to accomplish."
Doell started the program in 2010, and in four short years led the Pirates from a last place finish, 172 strokes over par at the BIG EAST Championship in 2011, to the pinnacle of the conference just three years later.
This year, Seton Hall won two tournaments and placed in the top-five in eight of the 10 events it participated in. Last year, the Pirates continued their climb to national prominence. All nine tournaments in 2012-13 were top-10 finishes, with eight placements in the top-five. Doell's Pirates took home their second team championship with a seven-stroke victory at the Rutgers Invitational, Oct. 5-6. The Pirates' success could have been compounded with a few lucky bounces as they also finished second, three times by just one stroke.
In all, Doell has guided Seton Hall to four team tournament titles in four years, and three different individual champions. Last season, the Pirates also reached as high as #94 in the Golfstat rankings, a far cry from where the team started.
