BLACKSBURG, VA. - Returning to competition three weeks after dominating the 2014 BIG EAST Championships, three Seton Hall divers took part in competition on day one at the NCAA Zone A Regional Championships hosted by Virginia Tech.
Conference champions and reigning BIG EAST Most Outstanding Divers Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) and Gabby Signorelli (Massapequa, N.Y.) were joined by senior captain and two-time conference silver-medalist Katie Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.) in qualifying for the prestigious regional meet.
Making his second consecutive trip to Zones, Mitchell was one of 44 male divers to take to the three-meter board on Monday; an event in which he finished 18th as a sophomore last season. The Milford product accumulated a six-dive score of 272.75, ranking 27th in the preliminary round; nine spots and just under 27 points shy of reaching the final for the second year in-a-row.
Signorelli and Riley were each making the first Zones appearance of their respective careers and were part of a one-meter field that featured 51 female divers from all across the region. Signorelli tallied a 200.40 to finish among the top-40 while Riley finished in 49th with 171.20 points.
Overall, the three Pirates were the only BIG EAST representatives in action at the meet on Monday.
Competition will resume tomorrow, Tuesday, March 11 with the women taking to the three-meter board and the men vying for supremacy from one meter.
