NEW YORK, N.Y. - Three days after raising the bar yet again by shattering his own school record from the three-meter board, Seton Hall senior and reigning conference champion Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) netted his second Men's BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week award of the young season it was announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Mitchell, who took home the first weekly award of 2014-15 after starting his final campaign with a pair of wins against Montclair State, delivered a six-dive score of 374.02 in a team victory over the Friars that far surpassed the mark he set in October. Not to be lost in the record-breaking performance, Mitchell also remains undefeated in three-meter competition this fall.
The Milford native also claimed top honors from the one-meter board, where his acrobatics landed him a score of 314.62, besting the lone Providence competitor by more than 90 points.
Mitchell has now exceeded the 300-point mark in six out of eight events he has entered to this point in the year, registering a 299.4 mark in one of the few exceptions, and has earned another trip back to the NCAA Zone A Regional Championships.
Prior to the 2011-12 season, Mitchell's first at The Hall, no Pirate diver had ever reached 300 points in a six-dive set.
His recent efforts helped power a dominant 181-93 win against the Friars that moved the Seton Hall men to 5-1 overall.
Both swimming & diving squads will be back in action this weekend, as the Pirates will head to Rutgers for a two-day meet that will include conference rivals Georgetown and Villanova. Competition will begin on Friday, November 7 and conclude the following day.
