NEW HAVEN, CONN. - A doubles victory by the Pirate tandem of Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) and Hannah Liljekvist (Djursholm, Sweden) highlighted day two of action for the Seton Hall tennis squad at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)/United States Tennis Association (USTA) Northeast Regional Championship on Friday.
Keenan and Liljekvist outlasted the Boston University pair of Johanna Hyoty and Kim McCallum in the opening round of main draw doubles competition, scoring an 8-7 (6) win to advance to the round of 32. The two Seton Hall juniors would come up short in the subsequent match however, dropping an 8-1 decision to SUNY-Albany's Ana Glumac and Alba Sala.
The duo's opening round victory gave The Hall its second entrant into the round of 32 at the regional championship in as many years after Rocio Portela and Chloe Sher advanced to the round of 16 last fall.
After picking up a win in the first round of qualifying singles on Thursday, Keenan was also eliminated from individual competition by virtue of a 4-6, 1-6 loss to Mariam Zein of Rutgers.
The freshman team of Marisa Quevedo (Tyler, Texas) and Luize Liva Strike (Riga, Latvia) was also in action on Thursday but also came up short in their matchup with Brown's Hannah Camhi and Dayna Lord.
Liljekvist and Strike will take the court again on Saturday as part of the main draw singles bracket. Liljekvist meets Dassa Raynor of Quinnipiac at 10:30 a.m. for the right to play Boston College sophomore Lexi Borr in the round of 64 while Strike drew a matchup with Aarzoo Malik of UMass.
Strike's match is slated to begin at 12:30 and both can been seen at www.streamingtennis.com/yale For updates throughout the day, follow @SHU_Tennis on Twitter.
