PRINCETON, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's golf team will complete the fall season this weekend with three rounds of the Princeton Invitational at Springdale Golf Club.
In addition to Princeton and Seton Hall, 10 other teams will make up the field at the par-72, 6,128-yard course. The teams include Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Delaware, Lehigh, Navy, Penn, Rollins, St. John's and Yale. The field will play two rounds on Saturday and a final 18 holes on Sunday.
This is a tournament that the Pirates know well having participated at it in three of their first four years. However, it's an event that historically The Hall hasn't performed particularly well in. Seton Hall placed 12th in 2010, seventh in 2011 and seventh last year. The Pirates' best performance was their seventh place finish in 2011 when they finished 69-over-par.
Last fall, Seton Hall placed seventh at 93-over-par with a 335-311-311-957. Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) led the Pirates with a 21st place finish at 18-over-par.
Seton Hall is coming off a historic performance last week at the St. John's Invitational. For the first time in program history, the Seton Hall women's golf team won a team and individual title on the same day. Freshman Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) fired a 2-under-par, 69, in the second round to win the St. John's Invitational and lift the Pirates to a 15-stroke team victory.
Pantelas became the fourth player in program history to win an individual title and did so in convincing fashion. She entered the day trailing by one stroke, but went on to win the event by seven strokes over St. John's Anna Kim. Pantelas shot a 1-over-par, 74-69-143, to win her first career title in only her fourth collegiate tournament.
Collectively, it wasn't close. Seton Hall entered the final round trailing LIU-Brooklyn by one stroke, but was eight strokes better in round two, while LIU was far worse. The Pirates finished with a 46-over-par, 311-303-614 to win the event by 15 strokes over second place Rutgers. The team victory gives Seton Hall two tournament wins in the same season for the first time ever.
Seton Hall will bring five Pirates to Princeton this weekend, Pantelas, Zabrosky, Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.), Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) and McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.).
"It would put an exclamation point on a strong fall season if we could do well at Princeton," said head coach Sara Doell. "We're playing with confidence right now, and I expect our strong play to continue this weekend."
Seton Hall got more good news earlier this week when the first golfstat rankings were released. The Pirates are ranked 90th in the nation, which represents the highest ranking in program history.
