Mitchell, who swept the BIG EAST diving titles last winter en route to Most Outstanding Diver accolades at the conference championships, nearly opened this season with two more record breaking performances in the opening competition of the year against Montclair State University last week.
The diving portion of the meet, which was held at Seton Hall, resulted in a pair of wins for Mitchell, who nearly broke his own school record in the three-meter board. He posted a score of 322.35, falling just shy of the 326.05 Seton Hall record he set just last season.
Mitchell also grabbed the win in the one-meter springboard, scoring 299.4 in an event where he also holds the school record as the only diver in program history to eclipse 300 points.
Thanks in part to Mitchell's dominance on the boards, Seton Hall cruised to a 185-95 victory over Montclair State.
It is a strong start for Mitchell as he begins his quest to qualify for NCAA Zones for a third-consecutive year. He placed 27th in the three-meter at last year's NCAA regional championship, and 34th in the one-meter competition.
The Pirates are back in action later this week as the men's and women's squads head to Rider University on Thursday, Oct. 14. Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
