The dynamic duo of freshman Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) were champions in the second flight of doubles competition. The two claimed the title after Georgetown's Sophia Barnard and Madeline Foley withdrew from competition.
"For being a new pairing, Katie and Madison have already come a long way," head coach Greg Wyzykowski said. "I can say that Katie has come in as a freshman and has listened to everything we've tried to teach her. Her level of play has been special and I can't wait to see this pairing as they go forward."
Headlining the day as well was senior Anna Guryanova (Moscow, Russia), who was in the fourth singles flight championship match. After defeating Howard's Sajela Harlow on Saturday, Guryanova took on Navy's Audrey Channell. The two played to a tight first set, but Harlow set the tone in a match she would not give up, winning 6-4, 6-1, (10-5).
While the four others were not in official tournament action on Sunday, the Pirates took on Mary Washington in exhibition action. "Our girls dominated," Wyzykowski said. "I felt it was good to get some work in before we left. With a short week coming up, it was nice to boost some confidence levels."
Going forward, the Pirates' pairing of freshmen Marisa Quevedo (Tyler, Texas) and Luize Liva Strike (Riga, Latvia) has Wyzykowski excited. "I think the entire freshmen class has come in and absorbed what this program is about very quickly," he said.
Strike has advanced to the quarterfinals in the top singles flight in three straight tournaments.
The Hall's Isabell Klingert (Oberbalch, Germany), a junior transfer from Gonzaga, and classmate Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) have also provided great leadership to the freshmen. The two were unable to record a doubles win this weekend, but both found consolation wins in singles efforts.
The blue and white does not have a long rest as the Pirates will travel to New Haven, Conn. For the ITA Northeast Regional, which runs from Friday, Oct. 17 - Monday, Oct. 20.
