NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Junior Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) shot a first round, 76, to lead the Seton Hall women's golf team to a ninth place standing after the first 18 holes of the 2013 Yale Women's Intercollegiate.
Collectively, the Pirates shot a 27-over-par, 311, in round one and currently trail the leader, and host, Yale, but 19 strokes. Only one other BIG EAST competitor is among the field of 17 teams. Xavier is currently tied for third place, eight strokes ahead of Seton Hall.
Today's scores are promising following a disappointing tournament last weekend. At Princeton, every Seton Hall golfer except Karlie Zabrosky (Loveland, Ohio) had at least two rounds of at least 80 strokes. However, in Friday's first round at Yale, all six Pirate golfers scored in the 70s.
"I'm really encouraged with our effort today," said head coach Sara Doell. "We came out today much more focused and in a good frame of mind. We're in a good position now to steadily move up the leader board as the tournament continues. I'm looking forward to seeing what tomorrow brings."
McClure fired a 5-over-par, 76, to lead Seton Hall and is currently tied for 14th place among 91 individual golfers. She is seven strokes off the individual lead held by Adela Cejnarova of Boston College and Elisabeth Bernabe of Yale.
The remaining Seton Hall golfers were clustered within one stroke of each other. Zabrosky, Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) and McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.), competing as an individual, all registered a 7-over-par, 78, and are tied for 33rd place overall. Senior Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) and sophomore Megan Tenhundfeld (Erie, Pa.) are only one stroke behind following their 8-over-par, 79's. They're tied for 41st place overall.
In addition to Seton Hall, the field this weekend also includes two Yale teams, Boston University, Bucknell, Central Connecticut State, Charleston Southern, Dartmouth, IUPUI, Lehigh, LIU-Brooklyn, Longwood, Pennsylvania, Quinnipiac, Rutgers, Sacred Heart and Xavier.
Designed by champion golfer and co-founder of the USGA Charles Blair Macdonald, the par-71, 6,044-yard Yale Golf Course is an exemplar of the early American golf course and has consistently been voted the number one college golf course in America.
Golfers will tee off with an 8:00 a.m. start on Saturday, based on Friday's results, and a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday.
Results will be available after each day's competition has been completed at www.SHUpirates.com.
