NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The Seton Hall women's golf team will return to the links this weekend for three rounds of golf as part of the 2013 Yale Women's Intercollegiate.
Designed by champion golfer and co-founder of the USGA Charles Blair Macdonald, the par-70 6,044-yard Yale Golf Course is an exemplar of the early American golf course and has consistently been voted the number one college golf course in America.
In addition to Seton Hall, the field this weekend will include two Yale teams and 14 other teams, including Boston University, Bucknell, Central Connecticut State, Charleston Southern, Dartmouth, IUPUI, Lehigh, LIU-Brooklyn, Longwood, Pennsylvania, Quinnipiac, Rutgers, Sacred Heart and Xavier. Coming into this weekend's tournament, host Yale is ranked No. 15 in the country among Division I teams by Golfstat.
This is a tournament that Seton Hall knows well as it's making the trip to New Haven for a fourth straight fall. The Pirates continue to move up the leader board at the event, improving from a 13th place finish in 2010, to an eighth place finish in 2011, to a fourth place tie last year. In 2012, Seton Hall tied with Yale, 45 strokes behind Nova Southeastern. Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) led the Pirates with a 4-over-par, 77-70-73-220, to place eighth among all individual golfers.
This season, head coach Sara Doell will take Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.), Kruse, Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.), Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) and Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.). McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.) will also make the trip and compete as an individual.
Seton Hall is coming off a seventh place finish at the Princeton Invitational last weekend.
"Obviously, we're disappointed with last week's result, but we were able to use it as motivation this week in preparation of the Yale Tournament," Doell said. "Golf can be humbling when you're not on the top of your game, but sometimes a poor performance can make you better down the road. I think we'll use last weekend to refocus and come out with our best efforts on Friday."
Golfers will tee off with an 11:00 a.m. shotgun start on Friday, an 8:00 a.m. start on Saturday, based on Friday's results, and a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday.
Results will be available after each day's competition has been completed at www.SHUpirates.com.
