PRINCETON, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's golf team will return to the links this weekend for three rounds of golf as part of the 2013 Princeton Invitational at Springdale Golf Club.
A small field of only eight teams will take on the par-72, 6,131-yard course. In addition to Seton Hall and host Princeton, participating schools include: Columbia, Delaware, Harvard, Lehigh, Penn and fellow BIG EAST member, St. John's. The teams will play two rounds on Saturday and one on Sunday with tee times beginning at 8:00 a.m. both days.
The Princeton Invitational wasn't held last year, but Seton Hall did participate in the event in the two years prior. In 2010, the Pirates placed 12th at 145-over-par. Then freshman Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) led the team with a 15-over-par, 76-78-77-231, to tie for 20th place among all individual golfers. The next fall, Seton Hall shaved off 76 strokes from the prior year to finish seventh at 69-over-par. Basalone had another strong showing with a 14-over-par, 77-77-76-230, to tie for 16th place.
The Pirates will bring McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.), Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.), Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.), Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) and Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.). Basalone will join the team in Princeton and compete as an individual.
"We're looking forward to heading back to Princeton," said head coach Sara Doell. "It's a great golf course that's very beatable if you play smart on the Par 5's. Our team hits the ball long, which will help us tremendously on this course."
Seton Hall is coming off a second place showing at the fall season-opening Bucknell Invitational last weekend. The Pirates used a strong third round to finish ahead of 15 opponents with a three round score of 82-over-par, 313-311-298-922. Juniors Ali Kruse and Erin McClure led the way with a pair of top-five finishes. Kruse finished third among 90 golfers, just one stroke behind the individual champion. McClure registered her first career top-five, finishing just one stroke behind Kruse for fourth place overall.
"We had a great week of practice," Doell said. "Coming off the Bucknell Invite, we identified the areas that we need to improve upon moving forward. The focus this week has been on improving our short games and hitting greens. We'll be ready this weekend."
