REUNION, FLA. – Junior
Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) fired a 1-undeer-par, 71, to lead the Seton Hall women’s golf team to a third place standing following round one of the 2013 BIG EAST Championship at Reunion Resort in Florida. Collectively, the Pirates shot a 13-over-par, 301, in the first round and trail the leader, Louisville, by 14 strokes. They’re seven strokes behind Notre Dame for second place. “We played great today,” said Head Coach Sara Doell. “301 is a good number. Seeing the team in third place is a testament to the hard work we’ve put in. We now belong next to the Louisville’s and Notre Dame’s in the standings.” Basalone is currently tied for second with three other golfers, just one stroke behind St. John’s Harin Lee for the individual lead. “It’s nice to have Hannah back after a rough tournament last week,” Doell said. “She even left a couple of shots out there today. I’m excited to see what tomorrow brings for her.”
Christina Cantú (Houston, Texas) also had a strong first round, particularly its finish. The junior birdied hole 15 and eagled hole 17 before finishing with a 3-over-par, 75. Cantú is currently tied for 12
th place overall.
Sophomore Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) is only one stroke behind Cantú following her 4-over-par, 76, in the first round. Classmate Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) fired a first round 7-over-par, 79.
Freshman Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) rounded out the Pirates’ scoring with an 11-over-par, 83.
For finishing the first round in the top-three, the Pirates will be paired with golfers from Louisville and Notre Dame for Monday’s second round. Tenhundfeld will get the Pirates started with a tee time of 9:40 am.
The eight-team BIG EAST field is competing on the acclaimed Tom Watson Course, a par-72, 7,257-yard signature design by Watson himself that’s highlighted by fast, firm and wide rolling fairways as well as a variety of strategically placed bunkers and large greens.
