REUNION, FLA. – The spring season is coming to a close for the Seton Hall women’s golf team with the 2013 BIG EAST Championship, April 21-23, at Reunion Resort, just outside Orlando, Fla. The eight-team BIG EAST field will compete on the acclaimed Tom Watson Course, a par-72, 7,257-yard signature design by Watson himself that’s highlighted by fast, firm and wide rolling fairways as well as a variety of strategically placed bunkers and large greens. The teams will be grouped by golfstat ranking for the first round. Seton Hall is currently ranked fifth in the BIG EAST via golfstat and will be paired with Cincinnati and St. John’s. The full golfstat rankings are as follows: #1 Notre Dame – 26 #2 Louisville – 68 #3 USF – 94 #4 Cincinnati – 115 #5 SETON HALL – 116 #6 St. John’s – 141 #7 Georgetown – 161 #8 Rutgers – 171 Seton Hall will be bringing the same lineup that has produced significant success throughout the 2012-13 academic year. Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.), Christina Cantú (Houston, Texas), Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.), Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) and Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio). “This tournament is what we’ve worked towards all year long,” said Head Coach Sara Doell. “We’re playing excellent golf and we’re bringing our top lineup. I’m very excited about our opportunity to make a statement at our conference’s marquee event in only our third appearance.” The Pirates enter this year’s championship with a string of seven consecutive top-five team finishes. Most recently, Seton Hall placed second at the Brown Bear Invitational in Barrington, Rhode Island. McClure fired a career-best round, an even-par, 72, in the final round to lift the Pirates to an impressive finish. Both McClure and Kruse tied for seventh place among 83 individual golfers to lead Seton Hall. This is only the Pirates’ third participation in the BIG EAST Championship. In 2011, the program’s inaugural year, Seton Hall finished a distant eighth place. In only one season, the Pirates improved dramatically to place fourth in 2012. Basalone, Cantú, Kruse and McClure all have experience competing at Reunion in last year’s fourth place finish. Basalone placed 11th last year with a 15-over-par, 74-79-78-231, while Cantú finished 13th with a consistent 18-over-par, 78-78-78-234. “The success we’ve enjoyed this year has been a testament to the hard work that these impressive young student-athletes have put forth since the program started in 2011,” Doell said. “I’m already incredibly proud of them. It would not surprise me to see them in contention on Tuesday.” Championship Central at www.bigeast.org is providing wall-to-wall coverage of the three-round event. Golf stat is providing live scoring. Complete coverage of Seton Hall’s performance will be available following each day’s competition on www.SHUpirates.com.
