
SHU Seeded #14 at BIG EAST Tourney

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -The Seton Hall tennis team has been named the #14 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship, drawing a Noon matchup with #3 Louisville in one of seven opening round matches to be held on Thursday, April 18 at the USF Varsity Courts in Tampa, Fla.
In a change in format from last season, all 15 women’s tennis teams in the BIG EAST will compete at the conference championship.
The Pirates finished the spring with a 5-12 record overall. SHU played seven consecutive conference opponents to close the year, picking up wins against Providence and Villanova en route to a 2-5 mark in league play.
One of four matches scheduled for the afternoon session on Thursday, SHU will square off against Louisville for the first time under head coach Greg Wyzykowski, now in his sixth year at the helm.
The Cardinals will enter the tournament coming off a win against DePaul in their final regular season match, and were victorious in their only two BIG EAST dual matches of the year. In all, Louisville posted a 14-7 record in head-to-head matches, finishing a perfect 8-0 at home.
Should Seton Hall advance in the main draw, they are slated to face the winner of a match between familiar local rivals, #6 Rutgers and #11 St. John’s.
Last season, The Hall earned its first conference tournament bid in five years. As the #12 seed, the Pirates bowed out in two matches following losses at the hands of #5 Georgetown and #9 Cincinnati.
This year’s tournament which will once again run over four consecutive days at USF; will also feature a consolation bracket, guaranteeing all the teams at least two matches.
#1 seed and defending conference tournament champions Notre Dame received the lone first round bye. Other opening round matchups include #8 Marquette and #9 Cincinnati, fourth-seeded Syracuse up against the 13-seed Connecticut, #5 DePaul vs. #12 Providence, the second-seeded hosts, USF against #15 Villanova and #7 Georgetown vs. #10 Pittsburgh.
