Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) shot a career-best, even-par, 72, in the second and final round of the 2013 Brown Bear Invitational to help lift the Seton Hall women’s golf team to a second place team finish. Collectively, the Pirates improved from a fourth place tie after round one to a second place finish after round two, the team’s seventh straight top-5. Seton Hall improved 15 strokes in Monday’s second round to finish with a two-day total of 45-over-par with a 318-303-621. The Pirates finished 17 strokes behind the team champion, Yale, but 10 strokes ahead of St. John’s and 19 strokes ahead of Rutgers, Seton Hall’s BIG EAST competition. McClure and fellow sophomore
Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) tied for the Seton Hall lead and seventh overall among 83 individual golfers. McClure finished at 9-over-par with an 81-72-153, while Kruse was 9-over-par with a 77-76-153. Both golfers finished five strokes behind the individual champion, Jennifer Neville of St. John’s. “Erin was tremendous today,” said Head Coach Sara Doell. “She played very composed and I’m thrilled to see her record a score reflective of her effort. Our team’s overall performance today was terrific. I’m very encouraged to leave Rhode Island following this kind of an effort as our focus now shifts to the BIG EAST Championship.” Freshman
Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) put forth the second-best tournament effort of her young career. She tied for 14
th overall with a 12-over-par, 879-77-156.
Fellow freshman Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) tied for 23rd place with a 16-over-par, 82-78-160.
Junior Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) rounded out the Pirates’ team scoring with an 18-over-par, 81-81-162.
Samantha Massei (Allen, Texas) and Haley Van Es (Granger, Ind.) also made the trip and competed as individuals. Massei finished with a 33-over-par, 88-89-177, while Van Es shot a 39-over-par, 91-92-183.
Seton Hall will complete the spring season with the 2013 BIG EAST Championship at Reunion Resort just outside Orlando, Fla., April 21-23.
