BLACKSBURG, VA. – The 2012-13 season continued on Friday afternoon for Seton Hall sophomore diver Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) as he joined 42 other male divers in competing on day one of the NCAA Zone A Championships, hosted by Virginia Tech.
The sophomore earned his trip to Blacksburg with a pair of record-breaking performances earlier in the year and now stands as the SHU record-holder from both one and three-meters.
Mitchell and the rest of the male qualifiers took part in the one-meter competition on Friday, the first of three days at the meet. In the preliminary round, Mitchell scored a 254.05, placing 26th overall and just over 14 points shy of advancing to the final round.
Logan Schinholser of Virginia Tech and Harvard's Michael Mosca took the top-two spots in the final standings to claim Zone A's two automatic qualifying spots for the NCAA Championship.
The Milford native was one of only five BIG EAST divers in the competition, a little more than two weeks after he became the first SHU diver to reach an ‘A’ final at the conference championship. Mitchell scored for The Hall by placing seventh from the three-meter board in Indianapolis, and will get the chance to compete again from three meters on Saturday.
Action will begin from Blacksburg at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow, March 16, with the final round slated to start by approximately 2:30 p.m.
