
Pirates Close Season at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Seton Hall men’s swimming & diving team joined Georgetown and Villanova in the pool on Saturday, completing their regular season schedule with the final day of a tri-meet hosted by Rutgers University.
Georgetown and Villanova were competing for the second consecutive day while RU does not field a men’s squad and only competed on the women's side. Reported team scores do not reflect the fact that due to inclement weather; SHU did not participate in the first day of the two-day meet.
Despite limited opportunities, senior Ryan O'Shaughnessy (Coral Springs, Fla.) impressed by picking up two top-three individual finishes on the day.
His 53.39 mark in the 100-yard butterfly was tops on the team and earned him third-place. The senior also placed third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.41), an event in which The Hall was led by sophomore James Logan (Wallingford, Pa.) who took second with a time of 2:12.61. Ian DeLisio (Woodstock, N.Y.) picked up a fifth-place finish (2:15.82) to round out a trio of Pirates in the top-five.
Seton Hall recorded two more top-five performances in the 100-yard freestyle as freshman Tim Bosse (New Windsor, N.Y.) clocked in at 48.06 took take fourth, immediately ahead of Logan in fifth (48.58).
Senior Ian Keyser (Petersburg, N.J.) was another standout for SHU at the Rutgers Aquatics Center, collecting a pair of top-six times in the regular season finale. Keyser placed sixth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:53.15 and turned in the third-best 400-IM mark of the day, reaching the wall in 4:15.87. Freshman Andrew William (Bayonne, N.J.) joined Keyser in the top-six of the 400-IM, placing sixth behind a 4:22.61 effort.
A ninth top-six performance for the Pirates belonged to junior Matt Benson (Overland Park, Kan.) as he tied for sixth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:02.47.
In the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays, a lineup consisting of Bosse, Logan, O’Shaughnessy and junior Joey Lacus (Wethersfield, Conn.) guided Seton Hall to third place finishes.
From the diving board, sophomore Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) claimed the top spot from the three-meter board, finishing atop a group of five competitors in the only men’s diving event of the day. Mitchell scored a 282.00, surpassing his nearest competitor by more than 30 points for his ninth first-place score of the season.
Mitchell heads into the conference championship having broken the one and three-meter school records multiple times in 2012-13 and has also qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in Blacksburg, Va.
After a period of training, the Seton Hall men will travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to challenge for the title of conference champion at the 2013 BIG EAST Championships. The meet will be held at the famous IUPUI Natatorium and is scheduled to run from Wednesday, February 27 through Saturday, March 2.
SHU will send a contingent of 17 members of the men’s team to the meet as the Pirates look to better last season’s eighth place effort and join the rest of the league in attempting to unseat defending champions Notre Dame.
