SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Head Coach Sara Doell announced the 2014 Seton Hall women's golf spring schedule on Tuesday. The Pirates will participate in four tournaments this spring.
Seton Hall will open the spring season with a spring break trip to the Los Angeles area. The Pirates will face LIU-Brooklyn and Central Connecticut State University at historic Torrey Pines to finish out the week in southern California.
"We've put together a great trip to the West Coast for our Spring Break training trip," Doell said. "We have the chance to play and practice at some amazing facilities. This trip will kick start our spring season and prepare us for 4 solid events after Spring Break."
The following weekend, March 21-23, Seton Hall will head to Crystal River, Fla. for the University of Cincinnati Spring Invitational at Plantation Inn Golf Resort. Last year, the Pirates placed fifth among 17 teams at the event. Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) shot a 1-over-par, 73, in the event's second round to pace The Hall to a Top-5 finish.
"Last year, one of our only disappointing performances was at this event, and I know the team is excited to get some redemption," Doell said. "This is a very score-able course, especially with the length that we have on this team. This event has a large field that we can be very competitive with."
For the fourth straight spring, Seton Hall will take on the field at the Hoya Invitational, in Beallsville, Md., March 31 - April 1. The Pirates know the course at The Members Club at Four Streams well, and will look to build off a third place finish in 2013. Basalone led the Pirates at 7-over-par, and placed sixth among 80 individual golfers.
"The Members Club at Four Streams, where Georgetown hosts this event, is a great test of golf," Doell said. "We've had some great rounds here in the past and I know we can use those experiences to help build our confidence for this year's event."
Perhaps the most exciting addition to the schedule for 2014 is the creation of Seton Hall's own Pirate Invitational, to be held at the acclaimed Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., April 5-6. It will be the first tournament that the women's golf program has hosted in its four-year history.
"The team and I are so excited to host our first Pirate Invitational at Trump National," Doell said. "The New Course at Trump is a very fair, yet challenging track that I believe we will play very well on. We have a solid field of 18 teams coming to Bedminster to compete."
Finally, Seton Hall will conclude the 2013-14 academic year with the BIG EAST Championship, April 17-19, at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. After a difficult first year, the Pirates have been in contention for the conference title in each of the last two title events. Last year, The Hall placed sixth, but finished only 10 strokes behind the third place team. After two years at Reunion Resort in Orlando, the event moves to Daytona Beach.
"This is a very exciting year for us as we compete in the first BIG EAST Championship of the newly reconstituted conference," Doell said. "Given the changes made to the conference's membership and the growth our team continues to demonstrate, both on and off the course, I think this is the best chance we've had to take home a title in our young history. But there's a lot of golf to be played between now and then."
