PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Junior Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) shot a 1-over-par, 73, in the first round of the 2013 Rutgers Women's Invitational on Monday. Both McClure and Seton Hall as a team are tied for the tournament lead.
Collectively, the Pirates fired a 14-over-par, 302, and are tied with Delaware for the team lead among 20 teams entering Tuesday's final round. Seton Hall is the defending champion at this tournament.
McClure is tied with Bucknell's Bridget Wilcox for the individual lead among 113 golfers.
"I'm very pleased with the team's performance today," said head coach Sara Doell. "If we can repeat this effort tomorrow, I'm confident we can repeat as champions. Erin, McKenzie and Karlie were terrific today. Any of them are capable of bringing home an individual crown."
McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.) currently tied for fifth overall only two strokes behind McClure following a 3-over-par, 75. Sophomore Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) is just one stroke behind Cutter, and currently tied for eighth place after her 4-over-par, 76.
It's not uncharacteristic to have three Seton Hall individuals rank highly on this course. Last season, when the Pirates won the team title, three individuals tied for second.
Senior Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) is currently tied for 20th place after a 6-over-par, 78, in round one.
Junior Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) rounded out Seton Hall's team scoring with an 8-over-par, 80.
Samantha Massei (Allen, Texas), competing as an individual, shot a 23-over-par, 95.
This year, in addition to Seton Hall and host Rutgers, competing teams include Albany, Bucknell, Central Connecticut, Delaware, Fairfield, Fairleigh Dickinson, Georgetown, Hartford, Hofstra, Lehigh, Long Island, Monmouth, Navy, Quinnipiac, Saint John's, Sacred Heart, St. Francis and Wagner.
The Rutgers University Golf Course was founded in 1961 with the construction of the present day 18-hole layout that was expertly designed by Hal Purdy, a noted golf architect. The course was officially opened May 29, 1963. Today, the par-72 course can be stretched to 6,337 yards and features a course rating of 70.5 and a slope of 130.
Tee times on Monday and Tuesday are from 8-10:20 a.m. Results will be posted on www.SHUpirates.com at the conclusion of competition each day.
