NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Sophomore Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) shot a Seton Hall women's golf record, 2-under-par, 70, in Saturday's second round of the 2012 Yale Women's Intercollegiate. As a team, the Pirates are currently in eighth place with 18 holes remaining.
Kruse's 70 is the lowest single-round score in the young history of the Seton Hall women's golf team. Her 2-under-par score is also a record and is the second sub-par round ever for the program. Kruse currently leads the Pirates and is tied for eighth place among 89 golfers with a 3-over-par, 77-70-147, through two rounds. Her Yale Intercollegiate exploits come on the heels of winning the St. John's Intercollegiate last weekend.
Collectively, Seton Hall improved by three strokes in round two, but the majority of the field improved on Saturday. In fact, 13 of the 16 teams had better round two scores. So despite by improving three strokes, the Pirates slipped from sixth to eighth place. Seton Hall is currently 33-over-par with a 306-303-609, but it's very capable of moving up the standings as only nine strokes separate it from as high as fourth place.
"I'm really pleased with our effort today," said Head Coach Sara Doell. "A 303 on a very challenging course is impressive. Ali was tremendous today. She is really making a name for herself. We're getting consistent golf up and down our lineup now, which is resulting in team success. If we can only get a few more putts to fall, we'd be in really good shape."
In round two, Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) flashed the same consistency that has made her a team leader. The senior duplicated her first round 75, in round two and is currently tied for 20th place overall with a 6-over-par, 75-75-150.
Freshman Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) and junior Christina Cantú (Houston, Texas) had some trouble on the greens, which hindered their ability to have even better round two scores. Tenhundfeld is currently tied for 39th with an 11-over-par, 76-79-155, while Cantũ is only two strokes behind with a 13-over-par, 78-79-157.
Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) shaved four strokes off her first round score. The freshman is currently 22-over-par with an 85-81-166 through two rounds.
