EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - Sophomore Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) fired a 2-over-par, 74, to pace the Seton Hall women's golf team to a second place standing after round one of the 2012 St. John's Intercollegiate.
Collectively, the Pirates shot a 16-over-par, 304, and are just three strokes behind the team leader and host, St. John's.
"I'm really proud of how the team played today," said Head Coach Sara Doell. "Ali and Christina were really steady all day. If a couple more puts fell they could be leading the tournament. I'm excited to see what tomorrow has in store for us."
Due to the close proximity of the tournament, Seton Hall brought a second or "B" team to compete in the field as well. All 10 of Seton Hall's student-athletes are competing in this event. The "B" team is currently in eighth place after round one following their 46-over-par, 334.
Kruse is currently tied for third place overall just two strokes behind St. John's Stephanie Eybers, who leads following an even-par, 72.
Junior Christina Cantú (Houston, Texas) is currently tied for seventh overall following her first-round 4-over-par, 76.
In fact, all five of Seton Hall's "A" team members are in the top-10 as Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio), Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) and Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) are all only one stroke behind Cantũ and tied for 10th place following their first-round 77's.
The performance for Basalone is particularly impressive. Earlier in the week, she sliced her left hand while making lunch and required four stitches. The junior was able to bandage the wound and fire a 5-over-par score in round one.
Freshman Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) led Seton Hall's "B" team with a 6-over-par, 78, and is currently tied for 15th place overall.
Sophomore McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.), battling with a sore back, shot an 11-over-par, 83, and is tied for 30th place overall. Junior Samantha Massei (Allen, Texas) is just one stroke behind Cutter and in 32nd place.
Juniors Haley Van Es (Granger, Ind.) and Stacie Ballou (Staten Island, N.Y.) round out the "B" team scoring with a 17-over-par, 89, and a 26-over-par, 98, respectively.
The second and final round of St. John's inaugural tournament will begin Tuesday morning.
