
Tennis Tops Providence, 6-1 in Home Opener

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall tennis team opened up its BIG EAST and home schedule on Saturday with a 6-1 triumph over Providence College.
The Pirates swept the doubles matches and earned five individual victories to secure the win.
Despite dropping the first set, sophomore Chloe Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) rebounded to prevail in her #1 singles matchup with PC junior Marisela Aviles-Duron, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0.
In the number three slot, senior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) swept Karen Ramirez, 6-2, 6-4.
Junior Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua) and freshman Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) also dispatched their opponents in straight sets.
Cordero defeated Taylor Corder 6-4, 7-6 (3) in #4 singles.
Shoemaker dropped only two games in her #5 singles match with Providence freshman Taylor Ahlborn, earning her fourth consecutive individual win with a 6-0, 6-2 decision.
Freshman Maria Rodriguez (Bogota, Colombia) also earned a point for SHU as she outlasted Alli Carnall 3-6, 7-5, 10-4 in #6 singles play.
In doubles play, Sher partnered with her classmate Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) in a 8-3 victory over Aviles-Duron and Maria Clara Bernardez in the number one slot.
In #2 doubles, Shoemaker and Verow downed the team of Ahlborn/Corder, 8-5.
Cordero and senior Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, Calif.) edged Carnall and Ramirez 8-7 (4) in #3 doubles to complete the sweep.
Next up for the Pirates is a trip to Orlando, Fla. Next week for three matches in three days. Action begins with a showdown against Bucknell on Tuesday March 13. Start-time is slated for 10:30 a.m.
