In team competition, the Pirates defeated Lafayette 194-106, besting the Leopards for the sixth consecutive season. SHU fell to Drexel 132-165 and in the closest showdown of the day on either the men's or women's side, were edged by Loyola 141-147.
The meet between Loyola and SHU was not decided until the final swim of the night. With the 400-yard freestyle relay serving as the finale, the Greyhounds placed second after Seton Hall's top team was disqualified.
Senior Austin Acheson (Olathe, Kan.) led a group of five swimmers who posted additional qualifying times, adding the option to swim the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley to his program at February's conference meet.
Matt Benson (Overland Park, Kan.) (200-yard backstroke), Tim Bosse (New Windsor, N.Y.) (100-yard freestyle), Greg Black (Easton, Pa.) and Ryan O'Shaughnessy (Coral Springs, Fla.) (100-yard butterfly) all surpassed standards in one event they had yet to make a cut in this season.
The aforementioned qualifiers accounted for three of SHU's four wins on the day, highlighting an effort that featured a number of notable performances.
Bosse collected his second career win in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.45), notching the first victory of the meet for the team in the process. The freshman also sprinted his way to a tie for second place in the 100-yard freestyle.
Black was the next Pirate to take first place points, touching in 1:56.14 to pace the 200-yard butterfly field. Acheson clocked in at 1:57.69 to occupy third.
Sophomore diver Ben Mitchell (Milford, Pa.) followed up his record breaking week by posting another victory from the one-meter board, scoring a 294.40 to edge Drexel's David Sanchez in second (294.05). He later took second place points in the three-meter dive with a score of 277.30.
O'Shaughnessy registered the squad's fourth win, swimming the fastest 200-yard breaststroke time of the night at 2:09.08. Sophomore James Logan (Wallingford, Pa.) gave The Hall two scorers in the event, finishing fourth (2:12.46).
O'Shaughnessy and Logan also combined to log a pair of top-five finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke as the senior placed third and Logan touched fifth.
Seton Hall also had a strong showing in distance races on Saturday. Senior Ian Keyser (Petersburg, N.J.) got the ball rolling with a third place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:03.49), followed by freshman Andrew William (Bayonne, N.J.) in fifth with a time of 10:18.44.
Keyser went on to claim fifth place in the 500-yard freestyle, one of three Pirates who posted a top-five time in the race. Acheson placed second (4:45.86) while fellow senior Brian Pauling (Sewell, N.J.) took fourth in 4:54.09.
With the team results, Seton Hall's record moves to 2-3 early in the season.
Weather permitting; Seton Hall will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 30 when they travel to New Rochelle to go heads-up with the Iona Gaels. Start-time is currently scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
