WEST POINT, N.Y. - After qualifying singles matches and opening rounds of doubles competition were held on Friday, day two at the 2012 ITA Northeast Regional Tournament saw main draw singles get underway from the campus of the United States Military Academy.
Chloe Sher (Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong) was the lone Pirate in action on Saturday, taking the court for the first time as an individual after receiving a bye into the round of 64.
A three-time qualifier for singles at the ITA Tournament, the junior entered Saturday looking to secure a win at the event for the third consecutive year. Sher drew Hannah Camhi of Brown in her first match after Camhi also advanced via a first round bye.
The first set developed into a tightly contested affair with each player struggling to maintain the upper hand. The Pirates’ top player was on fire early, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Camhi put together a run of her own to claim a slim 6-5 edge, but Sher rallied to force the set into a 13th game.
With the score knotted at 6-6, Camhi came out on top in decisive frame to take a 1-0 advantage in the match. She went on to win the second set, 6-2, eliminating Sher from the field.
Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) was the other SHU player to receive an invitation in singles, but fell in her first qualifying match on Friday. Sher and Portela also competed as a doubles tandem, as did freshman Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) and sophomore Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia). Both squads were ousted on day one.
Following the conclusion of the ITA Tournament, the Pirates head into the winter break coming off a largely successful fall season. Seton Hall will resume play when the spring season starts in February.
