
Tennis Captures Academic Honors; Announces ITA Regional Selections

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall tennis team earned All-Academic team recognition from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for the third consecutive year. The award recognizes teams with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
The Pirates also had a total of three players named ITA scholar athletes for the second year in a row. Sophomores Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) and Pui Wing Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) were selected along with graduated senior Michelle Weerasinghe. Athletes must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher to receive this award.
Head coach Greg Wyzykowski also announced the selections the team received for this weekend's ITA Regional Tournament in New Haven, Conn.
In singles, Sher has received a spot in the main draw and Portela will play in the qualifying round. The two will also team to play in main draw doubles.
Senior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) has been listed as an alternate for the singles qualifying round. She will also be in action in main draw doubles where she will be paired with with freshman Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) to comprise SHU's second entry in the field.
Play at the ITA Regionals is scheduled to begin on Friday from the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on the campus of Yale University at 8 a.m.
