
Tennis In Hunt for Titles at Quinnipiac Invitational

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Seton Hall tennis team had its second consecutive strong day at the Quinnipiac Invitational on Saturday. In singles play, freshman Pui Wing Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) and sophomore Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) will each play in the semifinals of the “A” and “C” brackets, respectfully. Cordero also teamed with senior Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) in the “B” doubles bracket and moved on to the finals to be played tomorrow.
The duo topped Army’s Audrey Hanson and Robie Verano, 8-4, and will face a pair from UConn in the finals.
Sher beat UConn’s Emily Herb in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) in the first round before downing Army’s Annie Hang, 6-4, 6-4, in the second round.
Cordero coasted to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Delaney Downing from Sacred Heart. Her second round match to Lucy Nutting from Connecticut was not as easy, but Cordero gutted out a 6-3, 2-6, 10-5 win to advance.
In the “B” bracket, Sunbul won her first round match against Rhode Island’s Tristany Leikem in three sets (4-6, 7-5, 10-7). Sunbul fell in the second round to Alexa Gregory from Connecticut, 6-1, 5-7, 10-7.
Junior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) dropped two matches on the day, falling to Lauren Wilmarth from UConn, 7-6 (6), 0-6, 10-5 and Sacred Heart’s Gabi Kaldan, 8-2.
Freshman Rocio Portela (Demetria Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) fell to Emily Stein from Army in a tight match, 7-5, 7-5, in the first round of the “A” bracket. Portela then lost to Hanna Fritzinger, 8-2, in a consolation contest.
In the Flight “A” semi’s Portela and Sher lost to Carolina Koladzyn and Monica Yajima, 8-4.
The tournament will wrap up on Sunday.
