HAMDEN, Conn. – Freshman Pui Wing Sher (Shui Wai, Hong Kong) won the singles “A” bracket at the Quinnipiac Invitational on Sunday. The Pirates had one other singles player and a doubles team reach the finals of their respective brackets as well.
Sher topped Quinnipiac’s own Adrienne Markison in three sets (6-1, 2-6, 10-5). In the finals, Sher would have faced Monica Yajima from Fairfield, but she defaulted giving the freshman the crown.
In “C” sinlges, Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela) easily dispatched Taylor Holt from Fordham, 6-1, 6-3, but fell to Abby McKeon from Connecticut in the finals, 6-2, 6-0.
Cordero also wrapped up “B” doubles with partner Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) on Sunday. The duo took on a UConn team and fell, 8-3, in the finals.
The Pirates have another weekend-long tournament at the East Coast Invitational, beginning on September 24.
